Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s presence will be hugely beneficial for the Indian team during the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, feels batsman Robin Uthappa.

Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings to victory in IPL 2021 last week, had lifted the inaugural T20 World Cup trophy as India captain in 2007 and will be mentoring the team in this edition which starts from October 23 with the Super 12s stage.

India will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on October 24.

“Dhoni’s presence will bring a calming effect in the Indian team. He will make things simple for the team and will be more proactive as a mentor.

“As a captain he’s given a lot of space to a lot of players but I think he will shift from that and become a little more proactive. He will go and speak more to the boys. That will help a lot.

“This will help the team a lot and make them feel a lot more confident, bring them a lot more back to the present which is required in the knockouts stage,” Uthappa told India Today on Salaam Cricket 2021.

India are heading into the T20 World Cup as one of the favourites to win the title, which they had first clinched under MS Dhoni, who is mentoring Kohli’s side in this edition.

India warmed up for the tournament with two comprehensive wins over England and Australia in the warm-up matches in Dubai. India have been drawn alongside Pakistan, Afghanistan, New Zealand and two qualifiers in Group 2.

All eyes of the cricketing fraternity will be on the mega-clash on Sunday when India will look to continue their unbeaten run against Pakistan in the World Cups. Pakistan and India have met 5 times in the T20 World Cup with the latter winning 4 games while one game produced no result.
