IPL 2021: Playing calculated cricket paid off, says KKR’s skipper Eoin Morgan after 3 wicket win over DC

The win over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, gave Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) a breathing space above the mid-table logjam in the ongoing 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

KKR skipper Eoin Morgan hailed his team’s calculated approach in the three-wicket win over DC.“ It is tough playing two games in three days. But I was delighted to get a couple of points. Winning toss and fielding is not an easy thing to do. Guys were more calculated today, and it came off,” Morgan told the broadcasters at the post-match press conference.“When the outfield is slow, if you are cagey it can come back to hurt you.”Morgan also played down the heated conversation, involving himself, Tim Southee and Ravichandran Ashwin, after the fall of the latter’s wicket.“Both sides played the game hard. On a hot day, things can boil over. Thankfully, it didn’t. We all played in the right spirit. And it’s a tough contest against Delhi Capitals,” said Morgan.The KKR skipper credited coach Brendon McCullum for the resurgence of the team in the second leg of the IPL.“Full credit has to go to our coach, Brendon McCullum. It’s his ethos, his mindset, and the boys have bought into that,” said Morgan.Skipper Rishabh Pant played a patient knock of 39 runs for the Capitals, while Steve Smith, who replaced Prithvi Shaw, also contributed 39 runs.Lockie Feguson, Sunil Narine and Venkatesh Iyer claimed two wickets apiece for KKR.Nitish Rana led the chase with a short but impactful innings of 36 runs after set batsman Shubhman Gill departed for 30. Sunil Narine made a quick 21 off 10 balls.“I think we were 10 short, not much. We knew the wicket would slow down in the second innings. But every team is trying to win the match. We want to give 100% and if it doesn’t go our way we will learn and move on,” Pant told the broadcasters after the match.“Batting was pretty difficult for new batters. We wanted to capitalise in the end with the bat, but we lost wickets and ended up 10 short.. There isn’t a massive change that we need to make,” said Pant.
